Newsletter, Friday 18th of September 2015

It is our first week of spending a full day in school and it was such a blast! This week, the children experienced the full routine of our activities and we are pleased to share that most of them are settling in well into the full day routine.

The start of our week was packed and busy! On Monday, some children went to the main playground to enjoy a relay game with Ms Christine. The children had the opportunity to practise taking turns, running, and moving in a range of ways. The children truly had fun and it was great for them to have an opportunity to explore and move around a much bigger space whilst enjoying a game with their peers.

Monday was also special because it was Mr Ian's birthday! The children made a large image of Mr Ian and put their colourful hand prints around it. Some children then surprised Mr Ian in his office and sang him the Happy Birthday song. Mr Ian seemed very surprised and happy!

This week, the children also started going to their favourite play area--the splash pool! The F2 team is extremely pleased that most of our children showed water confidence and enjoyed our splash pool sessions. The sessions were started with a short warm-up water exercise wherein they kicked their legs and made water splashes. Afterwards, they were given the opportunity to enjoy the area. The children used their legs and arms to move around and also poured water using the buckets. It was such great fun! Thank you parents for encouraging your children's water confidence!

On Tuesday, some children went down to the kitchen to bake oatmeal raisin cookies with Ms Clarissa and Ms Christine. The children learnt new vocabulary about kitchen and food such as measuring cups, oven, microwave, butter, sweet, and raisins. Each child in the group had the opportunity to pour, mix, and even smell the ingredients. All the children in the group were eager to participate and took delight in their task. The cookies that they made were shared to the entire class.

Children had a visit to the library on Wednesday where they listened to the story 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell. Through the story, the children learnt more about roles in the family and different kinds of emotions. Some of them even shared their own family experiences to the class. Most of the children also tried their best to focus on the story and sit in a circle sensibly.

The children also enjoyed 2 music sessions with Mr Jon this week. For the past couple of weeks, the children have been learning new songs and actions during music. Mr Jon was extremely pleased that most of the children can now confidently join in the songs and actions. In the coming weeks, the children may learn a new song again and even play some musical instruments!

We have been extremely busy in the classroom as well! Our children are becoming more interested in story books. Recently, they have been particularly interested in stories about aliens and the 3 Little Pigs.

In the investigation area, the children used their hands to enjoy the very interesting texture of the green slime in the tuff spot. The children mixed basil seeds and green food colour with the slime mixture and made it really ooey gooey! The children were also introduced to the magnifying glasses which they used to look closely on the objects we put on top of the light box.

Children have also been practising their cutting and colour recognition skills. The children have been practising their hand control through cutting pieces of paper. On the maths table, they have been sorting elephant counters by colour.

They also learnt how to play the boomwhackers properly as well as new nursery rhymes!

It was truly a busy week! The children deserve a restful weekend!

Newsletter, Friday 11th September 2015

In F2T, we continue to focus on the theme 'Families and Ourselves'. During our circle sessions this week, we talked about basic Roles of Family Members and What Families Do Together. We are very pleased to see that most children demonstrated eagerness in sharing stories from home. Some children talked about their parents going to work, baby brothers or sisters staying at home with mummy or daddy and grand parents helping them at home.

Our role play area is still a hit this week as children continue to play the roles of various family members. They still enjoy serving food, cooking, ironing clothes, looking after the baby and using the telephone.

F2 children also took part in the different activities in the classroom such as cutting a straight line, identifying numbers, sorting by colours, construction, doll's house role play, city mat/cars/garage and a lot more.

This week, we've also read the stories The Very Hungry Catrepillar, The Bad-tempered Ladybird, Nighty Night, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Gruffalo. The children had a go at naming the characters, repeating phrases and guessing what might happen next. We are also beginning to teach the children about basic parts of the book such as front cover, back cover, title and author of the story.

At this stage, all F2 children continue to be familiar with our new routines such as eating, toileting, dressing up and other self-help skills. We continue to encourage everyone to be more independent in doing these things.

It has been another fun and busy week in F2T! All the children deserve a good rest over the weekend!

Enjoy the photos and have a lovely weekend :)

Newsletter, Friday 4th of September 2015

Our children's first full week back in school has been quite a busy one. The week has been spent supporting the children in learning and getting used to the new routines that they have in F2. This week, we focused on transitioning to play spaces in groups more sensibly and in being more independent in our self-help skills such as eating, toileting, and putting our shoes on.

We have been focusing on the theme 'Families and Ourselves'. This week, the teachers shared their own family photos to the class and also talked about their own families. The basic roles in the family (mother, father, sister, brother, baby) were introduced to the children and the children's eagerness to talk about their own families was a delight to see. We will be continuing this focus in the next couple of weeks. In connection to this theme, the children have also been creating their own faces on the workshop table using blank face templates and plasticine. The children truly enjoyed this activity and even created the faces of their family members. You will see the lovely faces our children made displayed on our classroom window.

We also have a home corner set up in our role-play area. The children have been independently visiting this area and area and have been enjoying different home chores such as cooking, preparing and serving meals, washing clothes, serving tea, and looking after babies.

As usual, the play dough table was popular amongst the children and they kept their hands busy moulding, rolling, and using the play dough tools to create different food items such as ice cream, candies, and cupcakes.

We are very pleased to share that our children are slowly developing more control in handling tools and objects. They are also slowly developing their pen grip through different activities. The children have been enjoying drawing lines and circles using whiteboard markers, and are also using the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) pen when playing an ICT game. Children are also able to show good hand control in our construction and fine motor activities on the carpet.

It has been such a busy and great first week for all of us. Our children all deserve a restful weekend!
